TOUTLE - The poetry magazine Lynx, edited by Toutle resident Terri Lee Grell, recently gained national recognition after receiving a $500 grant from the Foundation of Contemporary Performance Arts, Inc. in New York City.
The magazine received the grant through the aid of John Cage, composer of such musical works as Three Dances, In a Landscape, and the Music of Changes, which is structured after the I Ching, the Chinese Book of Changes. Cage also writes renga, the poetry form Lynx is mainly devoted to.
Cage, a foundation board member, nominated Lynx after Grell sent him a copy when she requested an interview for her magazine.
"I was so excited when he told me that I didn't hear where the grant was from. All I heard was the word 'grant,'" Grell said.
The grant will be used to pay for postage and some of the costs of printing Lynx. It is available locally at The Bookshop and the Lower Columbia College Bookstore. A display at The Bookshop features the current and back issues of Lynx and books about renga and haiku, some by local authors.
