Mimes Putting Out Fire with their Hands
by T.L. Kelly
with William Stafford, Tess Gallagher and Marvin Bell
mimes placing their hands on invisible hands on a wall
deep night, night leaps forth
they shape nothing from the nothing they carefully shape -- ws
all their pennies spent on rock candy, the children
gather together at the barber pole
watch the read and blue lines appear, disappear -- tlk
when the hornet flies out of the apple, that girl keeps biting
as she runs inside the huge stinging body
she feeds like a throat on fire as the world breathes in -- tg
Darkness is the coldest fire: it coils inside
a spire gone down into the still caves
left hollow when color finds its way home -- ws
blowing out the candles, looking at the moon
sweet the smoke escorting the flame
sweet the face of the cold moon in the moonlight -- mb
light gone down, that silence leaning over
to touch new sound and blaze it forth,
for a sky to be born again, and a world -- ws
